Bulawayo Mobile Phone Filmmaking Workshop

Sunshine Cinema and FilmAid are partnering to provide an intensive, four day workshop that trains aspiring storytellers to develop the ability to capture local engaging short films made on their mobile smartphones. The workshop is open to journalists, activists, media professionals, local leaders and others who want to tell truthful and valuable stories about their communities and learn more about how to use those stories for impact.

During the in person training the following key themes will be covered:

Skills Development in Visual Storytelling – A Skills Development Workshop in smartphone-based visual storytelling production will be held. Participants will receive technical training alongside training in the documentary approach to storytelling with a focus on sourcing stories, casting subjects, and capturing action in front of the camera that can be edited into short engaging visual stories ready for distribution on social media, digital publications, and messaging apps.

Applicants are required to have a proven track record in media production focusing on human interest storytelling including a portfolio, references, and a smartphone with a working camera.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Participants must attend all four days of the workshop.
  • Participants must have a notebook and pen, laptop with an up-to-date operating system, a good quality smartphone with a camera, enough available memory to shoot a video, with full battery charger and cable to connect the device to a computer, and headphones.
  • Open to participants between the ages of 18-34 who reside in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
